Setting the Benchmark

Newcastle’s justice system has entered a new era, with the opening of a long-awaited courthouse in the heart of the city marking a new era for justice services in Newcastle and the Hunter region. The building creates a catalyst for the rejuvenation of the heart of Newcastle and a new  benchmark for such facilities in New South Wales.

The new $90 million justice precinct, built on 12,000 square metres, is a seven-storey complex and the most secure and technologically advanced courthouse in the state, setting a benchmark for how modern justice services are delivered in NSW.

The state-of-the-art courthouse, sitting at the heart of the civic precinct of Newcastle, is also symbolic of the growing importance of the provision of legal services outside of Sydney.

The former courthouse in Church Street had long been notorious for its antiquated facilities, pest problems and damp, dark conditions; however it had served the community well for 124 years.
