A request for an elegant refuge for a retired professional couple spawned this modern design.
Having grown up in Ridge Street, in the popular beachside suburb of Merewether, and raised a family nearby in Merewether Heights, it was an obvious choice for the owners of this residence, a retired professional couple, to opt to move back to their roots to downsize and build a retirement residence.
The entire exercise became a family project, acquiring the land from their licensed real estate son-in-law working alongside Murray James (architect) and builder Benn Lane of Rolenn Constructions.
The selected 7.6 metre-wide block was one of four side- by-side original miners’ cottages which were demolished to make way for four modern residences; a common occurrence throughout the suburb as the old makes way for the new, changing the face of the popular inner-Newcastle neighbourhood.
“We lived in an apartment overlooking Newcastle Beach for six months after selling our spacious family home, and realised apartment living was not for us at this time in our life,” the couple agreed.
