The Music of the Night

Julie and Graham Black from the Newcastle Metropolitan Players (METs) talk about what it meant to take on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s global hit, “Phantom of the Opera” as one of their productions this year. It all became clear how the Newcastle version was such a success when I sat down for a coffee with the couple.

Having seen the West End version of Phantom at least five times, I have been enthralled every single time. So it was with a small amount of skepticism that I went along to a performance of METs’ version. How humbled I was by the music, the voices, the staging and the costumes. I was captivated by the professionalism and desperate to find out more about the locals who pulled together such a spectacular spectacular!

It all became clear how the Newcastle version of Phantom of the Opera was such a success when I sat down for a coffee with married couple, Julie and Graham Black. They met on stage in 1973 and share a passion for and dedication to the theatre that just runs through their veins…
