The strength of this cookbook is that the recipes and tips have been mostly provided by cancer patients – people from all walks of life and at various stages of their treatment.

New on the book shelves is a cookbook, beautifully styled and like no other entitled  ‘The Patient Chef’ which is a collection of recipes used and recommended by cancer sufferers, their families, and those who work with them.

All nutritious, healthy and tasty, there are over 80 recipes including soups, smoothies, pasta dishes and sweet treats.

Every day, over 340 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Australia. One of the leading causes of death in Australia, sadly cancer accounts for three-in-ten deaths every year.

Among the many hardships of the battle faced by those diagnosed is the loss of something so simple – appetite.

A common side-effect of cancer and its treatment is a shift in appetite, due to a change in sense of taste or smell, dry mouth, mouth sores, metallic taste in the mouth and more. As a result, it’s not uncommon for nutrition to be added to the myriad of concerns faced by sufferers.

The late Dr Chris O’Brien, was a familiar much-loved and admired face on the medical reality TV program RPA, and Gail O’Brien, his wife has contributed recipes which she devised and prepared for her late husband which became his favourite meals…
