A True Family Affair

Residential builder and property developer Gary Ekert of Ekert Building has finally achieved a long held dream – to build a new family home and in doing so it became a real family affair with his two sons – Luke, a licensed builder and Matthew an apprentice builder working along him, as the next generation of family builders.

After owning their peaceful 60-acre land holding at Osterley, between Hinton and Nelsons Plains for ten years, virtually across the road from where they had been living for twenty three years Gary and his wife Kim decided to start to build their dream home before the family grew up and left home. They had previously worked with Adrian Sorensen Design in their building business so took their concept ideas to him to draw up the concept plan. The setting is idyllic with country views across the open plains and their herd of beef cattle peacefully graze in the paddocks beyond. The property was once a working dairy farm. To the other side is the 80-year-old original dairy which Gary wants to restore to retain the heritage of the land. Room for their four young adult children to have their own personal space was a major criteria when designing the residence in the form of a downstairs rumpus room. A parent’s retreat in the upstairs space of this spacious 980 square brick home which took 12 months to build, was also high on the list…
