Once a Rough Diamond Now a Sparkling Gem

Mayfield is an inner suburb of Newcastle with a population comprising a blend of older folk who have lived and worked in the suburb all their lives, newcomers such as younger families and professional couples are moving into the area. Now the homes are regarded as a good investment.

From the 1880s up until 1913, when BHP moved in Mayfield was the Toorak or Vaucluse of Newcastle – evident from the many heritage homes built at that time by prominent families of the day such as the Arnotts and Winns. Mayfield was the place of the first vineyard in the Hunter created by a German named Peter Crebert – a little-known fact. Today Mayfield is still a working suburb, yet is within a 10-15 minute drive or bus trip to the Newcastle beaches and restaurants in cosmopolitan Hamilton and Newcastle proper…
