Back to Singleton 2020 launch invites everyone to start planning their year of bicentennial commemorations

A whole-of-community commemoration is in the works for Singleton’s bicentennial next year, with a year-long program of events unveiled today.

Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore officially launched the Back to Singleton 2020 program at a special event attended by representatives from community organisations, businesses and sporting clubs who will host events as part of the 200th anniversary since John Howe led the first European exploration of the Singleton local government area in 1820.

The program also includes three major community events across the weekend 13-15 March 2020, starting with Singleton Homecoming on Friday 13 March 2020, a community street party on John Street from 6pm to 11pm. Then the free festivities continue on Saturday 14 March 2020 with family-friendly fun at Singleton Day Out on the Civic Green from 11am to 4pm. Old-time cocktail glamour will come to Singleton Civic Centre for Singleton Soiree also on Saturday 14 March 2020, with ABC personality and Singleton son Craig Hamilton on MC duty from 6pm to 11pm. Ticketing details will be announced shortly.

Cr Moore said the wide range of events happening throughout the year were a showcase of all there was to love about the Singleton local government area. “The Singleton Bicentennial Commemorations Working Group put out the call to all community groups, businesses, organisations and individuals to be involved, and they did not disappoint,” she said.

“There’s an amazing variety of events with something for everyone – from Devonshire tea at the 110-year-old Glendon Hall and vintage tennis through to tours of global industries and botanic gardens of rare species. It also includes ABC personality and Singleton son Craig Hamilton broadcasting live from Singleton. It’s well known that Singleton played an important role in the establishment of the colony of NSW, and the nation of Australia – and that role continues today, as you can see by just looking at this program.

“Back to Singleton 2020 is an open invitation to everyone to come home, come back or come and see what Singleton is all about. I hope everyone will get a copy or head to Council’s website to see the full program, and start planning their year of commemorations.”
