Make it Maitland – 2021 Archibald Prize

22 January – 6 March – In 2021, The Archibald Prize is celebrating 100 years as Australia’s oldest and most loved portraiture prize and Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) are delighted to be hosting the Prize in Maitland in 2022.

Prestigious and controversial, the Archibald Prize was first awarded in 1921, following a bequest from former Art Gallery trustee JF Archibald to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians.

The open competition has been awarded annually to the best portrait, ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in arts, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’. Don’t miss your chance to see the amazing collection of works as it visits MRAG, its first destination on tour from the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Entry to The 2021 Archibald Prize is by ticket only.
