The story of the Newcastle Art Gallery began in 1945 when Dr Roland Pope gifted 123 paintings and drawings to the city, with one powerful condition that a gallery be built to house them. His vision came to life in 1957, when the gallery first opened its doors on the second floor of the War Memorial
