Grab a rug, pack a picnic and head to Australia’s largest free regional outdoor cinema event. Newcastle Permanent’s Cinema Under the Stars event will travel to 16 locations in NSW, with four stops scheduled in the Hunter, including its first visit to Lake Macquarie. Each location will kick off at 5.30pm with a great line-up of free, family-friendly entertainment, including performances by talented local musicians, followed by a blockbuster movie for all ages at sundown. Paddington 2 will hit the screen at the Tomaree Sports Complex (January 11) and Speers Point Park (February 16), while The Greatest Showman will amaze and delight at King Edward Park (January 12), Maitland Park (January 18) and Central Coast Stadium (January 19). Featuring more than two million lights of all shapes, sizes and colours, the annual Christmas Lights Spectacular at Hunter Valley Gardens is nothing short of amazing. This awe-inspiring visual feast stretches across 13 hectares and is interspersed within the floral wonderland that the Pokolbin venue is known for. From glowing reindeers and giant teddy bears to a towering castle fit for a princess, the extravagant display takes months to put together and has grown to become the biggest Christmas lights display in the Southern Hemisphere. With live entertainment, a chance to visit Santa’s workshop and a host of amusement rides - including a giant illuminated Ferris wheel - the display offers hours of family-friendly fun once the sun goes down.
