Civic Theatre celebrates 90th birthday

March through November 2019
Newcastle's iconic Civic Theatre will celebrate its 90th birthday year with a season of live performances designed to spark imagination and with even more benefits for subscribers, including free parking at Civic West car park and discounts.
Season 2019 offers a thrilling mixture of dance, drama, comedy, physical theatre, puppetry and storytelling. Old favourites such as Bell Shakespeare and the Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals are back, complemented by exciting new works from local and major Australian performing arts companies.

Lake Macquarie Festival of Surfing

February 9-10
Head down to Redhead Beach to soak up the sun and the sight of some of the best surfing action you’ll see during the Lake Macquarie Festival of Surfing. Held in conjunction with Newcastle’s iconic Surfest festival, the Lake Macquarie event will see male and female surfers battle it out for glory and more than $23,000 in prize money during the ECS Surf Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and Paddle Battle - the richest SUP event in Australia. https://www.surfest.com/events/

Cinema Under the Stars

Various dates in the Hunter during January and February
Grab a rug, pack a picnic and head to Australia’s largest free regional outdoor cinema event. Newcastle Permanent’s Cinema Under the Stars event will travel to 16 locations in NSW, with four stops scheduled in the Hunter, including its first visit to Lake Macquarie. Each location will kick off at 5.30pm with a great line-up of free, family-friendly entertainment, including performances by talented local musicians, followed by a blockbuster movie for all ages at sundown. Paddington 2 will hit the screen at the Tomaree Sports Complex (January 11) and Speers Point Park (February 16), while The Greatest Showman will amaze and delight at King Edward Park (January 12), Maitland Park (January 18) and Central Coast Stadium (January 19).
