Restaurant Kawul
A sweeping vista overlooking the rolling Hunter vineyards, a long lunch on the verandah soaking up the winter sun. Good wine, great food in a stunning location – it’s an idyllic scenario, but this is the reality of dining at Kawul, situated on the grounds of Calais Estate.
The focus of the kitchen at Kawul is in harnessing our amazing native ingredients, merging them with fresh, organic, local produce and turning them into something delicious. The cuisine fuses ancient with modern to complement the land we live on and the times we live in.
Start with fresh damper or salt bush polenta chips; move onto gnocchi with warrigal greens and macadamia cream; portobello mushroom shepherd’s pie and sprinkles of wattleseed, or even crispy skinned barramundi with lemon myrtle and charred fennel. Share a chocolate brownie with yuzu, fig and coconut sorbet or finish with a local cheese board. Local wines are a given, and a good time is inevitable.
Open Thursday – Monday breakfast and lunch; Friday – Saturday dinner.
