An iconic cultural landmark reimagined for a new generation.

After years of anticipation, the Newcastle Art Gallery have reopened for a ‘sneak peak’ unveiling the first glimpse of a cultural landmark reborn.

An icon in the heart of the city, the gallery has long held a special place within Newcastle’s vibrant creative community. Visitors will get the chance to experience the first three of the total 13 gallery spaces to be opened by February 2026, offering an exciting preview of what’s to come.

The $145 million expansion celebrates the depth and diversity of Australian art, with a strong focus on First Nations commissions and acquisitions, honouring the gallery’s First Nations First ethos. Among the highlights is a selection of curated works by Margaret Olley, alongside a striking installation suspended within the soaring central atrium.

Gallery Director Lauretta Morton OAM describes the project as a powerful reflection of the community’s passion and generosity.

“This expansion is a testament to the extraordinary support of our donors and the people of Newcastle,” she shared.

Many of the new spaces have been named in recognition of the patrons and artists whose contributions helped bring the vision to life, making the exhibits a permanent tribute to their philanthropic efforts.

Amoung them is Valerie Ryan, a former Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation member and governor who gifted the gallery a $10 million bequest after her passing in 2019.

“An icon in the heart of the city, the gallery has long held a special place within Newcastle’s vibrant creative community.”

Another donor was the late Margaret Olley, a dedicated artist who found joy in portraying her deep connection to the city through her artwork. She gifted 48 of her works, as well as a $500,000 bequest for the expansion project via the Margaret Olley Art Trust.

Matching her generosity are Richard Owens and Robert Henderson, both long-time Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation leaders who, with their partners, have each pledged $500,000 to the expansion.

The gallery’s expansion project has also received a great deal of support from the federal and state governments, with each resourcing $5 million.

For lovers of art, architecture and history alike, the reopening marks a new era for one of Australia’s most significant regional galleries. A celebration of creativity, community and the enduring spirit of Newcastle.
