Tasting Cael’s Gate
To create his hand crafted, boutique wines, Cael’s Gate owner and wine maker Chris Chew partners with growers from around NSW. He focusses on Semillon and Shiraz from the Hunter and then predominantly Shiraz and Cabernet from the Riverina, Mudgee and Orange.
The Cael’s Gate Semillon shows the trademark Hunter lemon and lime citrus, a touch of lanolin with refreshing acidity which is perfect for summer. The Hunter Valley Shiraz is medium bodied and delicious with vibrant raspberries, blueberries and hints of vanilla. The standout wine is the flagship 2019 Mudgee Cabernet which has a riot of violets, blackcurrant, savoury herbs and olives, with balance and elegance on the palate.
Open Saturday and Sunday or by appointment, take a trip to Broke to visit this charming family-owned winery at their newly opened cellar door. Tastings are $10 per person, or $20 with a tasty cheese plate.
