The Makers and Shakers of Newcastle’s Creative Art Scene

Newcastle has always been home to a strong artistic community, but as we approach 2016, Newcastle and the Hunter are alive with makers, painters and sculptors and every kind of hands-on creative imaginable.

Melissa May – Illustrator, Art Teacher and Artist

Melisah May’s studio is a large and beautiful, light-filled space in a heritage building in Hunter Street. From here, Melisah works on solo projects and commissions as well as running art classes for kids, adults and corporate groups.

“Moving into this new studio has been the perfect combination of my two loves. I graduated from university in 2005 with a degree in natural history illustration and I followed that up with a Bachelor of Education in 2008. I had no idea how much I loved to teach art until I began.”

Melisah’s whimsical watercolours and detailed style of painting, heavily influenced by her love of colour, literature and music, are popular with magazines and businesses that use her work to illustrate articles and promotional materials.

“I take on new projects and commissions on a case-by-case basis. I loved providing the drawings for the three Urban Walkabout guides to all things cool and creative in Newcastle, they suited my style so well…
