Made with Style
From the street frontage, this home appears solid, hunkering down on the site – a perfect match for the environment in one of Newcastle’s popular inner-city suburbs of Hamilton East – a neighbourhood mix of industrial bordering on commercial and residential.
As the winner of the 2016 Newcastle Architecture Awards – Residential Architecture – New Houses Award, the home was pitted against quality and diverse residences – three of which were designed by the same multi-award winning architectural firm of SDA.
The standout features and the imaginative problem-solving design made it a worthy winner of this prestigious title.
Working closely with builder Guy Bunder of Made Architectural Constructions, SDA realised a shared vision for the triangular and severely constrained 200 square-metre site.
The final design solution combined an imaginative use of diverse materials creating a residence which invites you in to enjoy an interior with an industrial look, yet creates a warm and relaxing environment.
Dubbed the ‘Urban Eclectic House’, the home is unashamedly raw, and the material palette combines reclaimed brickwork with timber, Colorbond and concrete to create a home where internal and external spaces share the same material palette and where natural ventilation and light stream in throughout the day.
