Banking on Bison
In issue 91 of Hunter & Coastal Lifestyle Magazine we told the story of how Sarah-Jane Dunford and her husband Luke set up an American bison farm in the Hunter with the intention of breeding and raising a herd to be sold for their meat. They took delivery of their first four bison in late 2017 and had their first breeding season in February 2018.
While there are already a number of bison dotted around paddocks across the Hunter for use with rodeo and horse cutting activities, the Dunfords were joining less than a dozen graziers Australia-wide who are farming bison for meat.
On New Year’s Day 2019, living proof arrived that their first breeding season had indeed been successful. Sarah-Jane shared a photo of what must have been the first bison baby worldwide that was born in 2019.
