Multicultural Men’s Shed
The Waratah-Mayfield Multicultural Men’s Shed (WMMMS) has a clear purpose to advance the health and wellbeing of shed members. It does this by providing a safe and happy environment where skilled and unskilled men can, in the company of other like-minded men, pursue interests, learn new skills, pass on old skills, learn about men’s health and well-being and contribute to the wider community. With an emphasis on multiculturalism, the shed helps men in the area feel less isolated culturally. David Inglis has been supervisor for three years. “The men who frequent the shed often open up and talk about their lives in ways they could never do at home. Once they get here, or in any shed, there’s generally someone who is interested in similar subjects or can help with a particular question. They’ll just sit down and talk to each other,” he said. The Shed assists the community in a variety of ways, such as building picnic benches for parks and even a wheelchair ramp for a family’s house. “Nine times out of 10 all we charge for is material,” David said. “All we ask for is a donation. We’ve still got to replace saw blades or anything that gets broken.” To make a donation to the shed – material, financial or in-kind – call 4960 8248.
