The Umbrella Foundation

An accomplished mountaineer and public speaker, Cessnock local Gavin Vickers has become the Australian patron for the Umbrella Foundation, a charity supporting Nepal’s vulnerable children and their communities. Being adventurous from an early age, Gavin explored the nearby abandoned open cut coal mine and later broadened his adventures to the Blue Mountains. He climbed the highest peaks in New Zealand before eventually heading to the Himalayas and even leading a trip to the summit of Mt Everest (8848m). Spending so much time in Nepal, Gavin wanted to give back to what was, by now, his second home. He gives a percentage of his speaking engagements to the charity and raises funds to build schools, help women in remote villages start micro businesses and provide education for children while their parents work in the brick kilns.
