Open Day at the Cemetery
Sandgate Cemetery opened its gates wider than usual during its inaugural Open Day on 26 May, attracting around 1,000 people. Highlights included historical walks by Newcastle Family History Society, talks, hearse display, art and flower shows, harp playing, history of grave digging presentations, and performances by The Marching Koalas. The purpose of the event was to connect and contribute to the community by showing that cemeteries are places for the living as well as for those who are remembered.
