Warners Bay Girl Guides
Girl Guides is alive and well for girls aged five to 18 in the Newcastle area. There are active local units from Nelson Bay to Redhead, Toronto and Maitland. This year sees Girl Guides NSW celebrating its 100-year anniversary. Always resourceful, Warners Bay Girl Guides met online from home during Term 2 using Zoom to play games and to catch up. “As we return to a ‘new normal’ in a COVID-19 safe environment, we are rethinking many of our activities. Service is a big part of who we are.
Last year our senior guides travelled to Tamworth to deliver money to drought-stricken farmers, after a year of fundraising. The girls spent some time on farms and hosted a morning tea for the farmers to show their appreciation and let them know that some city folk were thinking of them. This year our annual sleepout at Taronga Zoo has been replaced by an online event, and our leaders participated in a fundraising walkathon to help raise money to help feed animals at the zoo. Visitor numbers to the zoo are down due to coronavirus yet the cost of feeding animals has gone up with the drought and bushfires, so Taronga needed help.“
