Youth serving their community
Northlakes High School Leo Club was chartered on 15 December 2019 with 16 members, and now has 32 enthusiastic students between 12-16 years. They are sponsored by Gorokan- Kanwal Lions Club. Leos raise funds for charities, volunteer in the community to help others, and assist Lions with projects while making new friends, having fun, and developing new skills.
Since the Leo Club started, three donations of $200 each have gone to Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Coast Shelter. Money was raised by holding barbecues, cake stalls, selling donated clothes and raffles. The Leos have volunteered at Camp Breakaway and visited the elderly at Warnervale Gardens Hostel providing gifts for Father’s Day and Mother’s Day.
The Leos have a number of ongoing initiatives, including Belle of the Ball where donated formal dresses go to Year 12 girls in need. The Leos collected items for the Charmhaven RFS during the bushfires and Share the Dignity, and warm men’s clothing, blankets/doonas and sleeping bags for Coast Hands to distribute to the homeless.
The Leos are seeking children’s books, teacups and saucers, costume jewellery, ceramic teapots, glass bowls, cake stands or chandeliers, oil burners, terracotta garden pots, CDs, old work boots and dolls-houses. These items will be made into craft, which the Leos will sell to raise funds for the Iris Foundation, supporting Adolescent Mental Health.
