Hamilton: The Bennett Hotel

Forget the saying, it seems you can teach an old dog new tricks. The recently renovated Bennett Hotel in Hamilton was built in 1865. But come 2020, you’ll find a fresh face behind the familiar name. Still oozing with that corner-pub community feel, it’s the interiors, the menu and the stunning sunny beer garden that have revealed what a thoughtful renovation can produce.

The main dining room is a paired-back, tasteful room and the kitchen has stepped up its game to suit. Plow into half a kilo of chicken wings smothered in a smokey Korean gochujang paste or go light with crab toast. The burger options are all mouth-watering and it’s hard to ignore pub classics like the schnitzel, parma or fish and chips. A slow braised beef cheek is meltingly rich. Served with bone marrow mash it’s the perfect comfort food.

With 24 tap beers and a great wine list, it’s casual, but with class. Head along midweek to save yourself a cook and enjoy one of The Bennett’s specials.

Open 7 days, lunch and dinner.
