Charlestown – Helping a community through kindness

There is an African philosophy of “Ubuntu” which loosely translated means ‘I am because we are’. The recent challenges we have faced as a community have served as a stark reminder that we are all responsible for each other, as families, friends, and as a community.

To assist our community through tough times, The Place: Charlestown Community Centre has collaborated with Sydney-based charity Project Kindness to launch a Kindness Cupboard. First opened in December 2020, the cupboard is filled with non-perishable foods and hygiene items, which are available for anyone in need. It provides a helping hand but also offers an opportunity for anyone to give back and support their community on the premise of ‘take what you need and leave what you can’.

The Place, located under Charlestown Square, is a not-for-profit social enterprise that welcomes and supports a diverse community to meet, connect, belong and grow. The Kindness Cupboard is one of many community opportunities offered. The Place provides a range of community programs, services, activities and events as well as affordable, quality venue hire.
