Newcastle East: Humbug

This wine bar and restaurant is the latest addition to the East End’s lively hospitality scene. With a playful, welcoming interior and former Subo head chef Michael Portley in the kitchen, the focus is on fresh, house-made pasta and snacks, made from locally sourced ingredients and paired with a wine list, carefully curated by Michael’s partner Stephanie Wells.

For lunch, try their house made sourdough focaccia. It’s deliciously soft on the inside with a seed-covered crispy crust. Fillings include fried mortadella and mozzarella with a green olive tapenade or felafel, tahini, pickles and chilli. Pasta is on the menu for both lunch and dinner. Think spaghetti with smoked mussels and sugo or macaroni with mushrooms, puffed wheat and soy cured yolk.

The list of snacks is delicious too – burrata with green tomato and persimmon or beef crudo with porcini cream and fried rice anyone?
