Take the trail less travelled

The boutique winemakers and restaurateurs, the artists and artisans of Broke Fordwich look forward to welcoming you to the Hunter’s tranquil side.

Rich in natural beauty, this striking region is bordered by Wollemi and Yengo National Parks, the meandering Wollombi Brook and awe-inspiring Brokenback mountain range. It has been home to the Wannaruah people for millennia and the surrounding rock caves are rich in Aboriginal art including the heritage listed Baiame Cave paintings.

A seam of red volcanic clay, the Fordwich sill, free-draining alluvial soils and sandy loams make for distinctive wines in a slightly richer, softer style.

There is a more tranquil vibe to this place, a pride in being just that little bit different from its larger winegrowing neighbours. The local vignerons and chefs, the restaurateurs, olive growers, alpaca farmers and organic soap makers, the lavender farmers and gin distillers like to do things their own way.
The cellar doors here are often quirky and unusual, many offer small bites to share, olives, cheese or charcuterie platters to further tantalise the palate.

Others are renowned for a more comprehensive food and wine experience, for their top-notch accommodation, sculpture park, olive groves or cooking classes. In Broke Fordwich, the combinations are endless and always authentic and delightful.

Dining options run the gamut from smokin’ hot barbecue to hatted fine dining. After a day of great food and wine, fun and adventure, go glamping or stay on a farm, spend the night in a rustic cottage or a wellness retreat, in a tiny house or on a grand estate. Wake up to a mug of freshly brewed coffee and a slice of home-made patisserie and get ready to do it all over again.

A bit more than an hour’s drive from Newcastle, and about two hours north of Sydney, Broke Fordwich is an easy region to explore. The quaint village of Broke is a great starting point. Then follow Wollombi and Milbrodale Roads and be prepared to make plenty of stops along the way.
