Roaring Seventies – Brokenwood launches Twenty70
Brokenwood Wines have launched a newly branded wine range which takes inspiration from the 1970s when the winery and their cellar door was first established. Twenty70 is the exciting “wild child” of Brokenwood, paving the way for a new era of retro-meets-millennial. Vegan friendly, red and white wine blends are sourced from certified sustainable vineyards.
Brokenwood winemaker Kate Sturgess was encouraged to step “out of bounds” into new territory with these wines. Together with the Brokenwood team, she has created wines focused on sustainability and infused with fun.
“It was an incredible opportunity to create something outside our classic range that people of my age will love to drink,” she said. “Twenty70 is a celebration of old and new – delicious on the palate and easy on the planet.”
The wines are designed as fresh, easy, early drinking styles for those starting out on their wine journey, with bold and bright labels playing on the 70s theme. The white field blend has a golden hue from the time it spent fermenting on skins, fragrant white flowers aromas, and notes of lemon and lime pie, with subtle lime cordial fruit and a lovely mouthfeel.
Enjoy with fresh fish and chips straight from the butcher’s paper at the beach with friends, or with your favourite cheese board selection. The red blend is fruit-forward with plum, cherry, blackcurrant and a lively long crunchy finish. It can be served chilled, and pizza or spaghetti bolognese would work perfectly with this wine. Brokenwood have also transformed the upstairs cellar door museum into an exclusive 70s themed apartment.
This fabulous retro-chic pop-up allows guests to experience an authentic 1970s style apartment for Twenty70 tastings and mingling with friends. Complete with vintage sofa, shag pile carpet, lava lamps and quirky Brokenwood memorabilia, the Twenty70 Apartment is open on Fridays and Saturdays. The $10pp entry includes a tasting of white and red Twenty70 wines.
