Broke Fordwich – Magoony’s Coffee House and Red Tractor Retreat

Broke Village: Make sure to stop at newly opened Magoony’s Coffee House at the old Broke service station. With heavenly coffee from Newcastle roaster Sprocket, house-made pastries, pies, paninis and a to-die-for Reuben sandwich, the O’Toole family, Melissa, her husband Paul and son Ryan, a pastry chef trained at Margan Restaurant, have created a characterful option for breakfast, morning tea, lunch or takeaway treats.

While you are there, make sure to have a look around the antiques and be wowed by Paul’s handcrafted recycled timber pieces. Made from old French wine barrels or slabs of River Red Gums, there’s a variety of dining or coffee tables, cheese boards or benchtops.

The family also operate charming, country-style Red Tractor Retreat, which caters for up to 12 guests and their pets. With established, beautifully cared for gardens, and a small vineyard, the property backs onto Wollombi Brook. Don the apron and cook up a storm in the chef’s kitchen with produce you have picked up locally, or let owner Melissa do the honours. As part of her much acclaimed catering business MOTTY’S FARM CUISINE, Melissa will come in, cook, serve and clean up. Using seasonal vegetables, herbs from her kitchen garden and meat from her farm, she will whip up a hearty soup or a three-course meal. The tasty choice is yours.
