Newcastle – Rebuilding confidence – one wig at a time
Acancer diagnosis comes with an array of emotions and a significant impact on one’s sense of identity.
There is no denying that appearance plays a big role in how people see themselves, so the concept of losing hair during cancer treatment can be daunting.
As the major cancer centre for the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid North Coast regions, Calvary Mater Newcastle has established a Wig Service to help patients rebuild their confidence. Run by dedicated volunteers Lyn Leach, Margaret Bottrill, Kim Frost and Ken Tarrant, it offers a free, personalised, on site wig-fitting service for Mater patients.
“We have patients receiving treatment that are understandably really down when they lose their hair, and sometimes they simply can’t afford to buy their own wig,” said Breast Cancer Care Coordinator Karla Rimmington. “This service exists to bridge that gap.”
