Excellence in Emerald

Newcastle Studio Potters Inc have just celebrated their 55th anniversary with an Emerald themed exhibition. Like silver stands for the 25th and gold for a 50th anniversary, emerald is the colour symbolising the 55 year milestone.

The passionate group of more than 80 clay creatives have been going since 1968, offering educational workshops and discussions to their members. Initially founded as the Newcastle Ceramic Group, they acquired the Back family’s old butcher shop in Cooks Hill in 1973 and transformed the salting and smoking sheds into a roofed workspace. By 1983, their name changed to Newcastle Studio Potters.

Through a blend of creative fundraising efforts and regular working bees, the members have transformed the shop into a delightful, brightly lit exhibition space known as the Back to Back Galleries. Since 1992, members and local artists have utilised this space to showcase their creative work.
Over the years, the group has enjoyed the support of Newcastle personalities such as Anne Von Bertouch and organisations like the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery and the Newcastle Museum.

Exhibitions at the gallery change regularly, so it’s always a good idea to pop in and be inspired by the lovely pieces on display and for sale. There are also regular pottery classes for adults if you want to try your hand at the turntable.
