Stars of Newcastle smashes records
On September 20, Civic Theatre was pumping with local talent as the annual Cancer Council Stars of Newcastle event dazzled audiences once again. 11 local community leaders took to the stage in partnership with dance schools from all over Newcastle and the Hunter. The ‘Stars’ raised funds for Cancer Council NSW through charity events and challenges, while practicing their best moves.
There was tap, lyrical, pop, hip-hop, salsa, you name it! Watt St Athletic Co-owner Adrian Cunningham won People’s Choice Award for his captivating “Kenergy” routine, bringing everyone to the world of Barbie. Neonatal nurse Josie Wicks was awarded as being the highest fundraiser, pulling in more than $34,000. Her fun, upbeat hip hop routine, following the story of a nurse on her lunch break, had audiences popping and locking with her all night.
More than $200,000 was raised for Cancer Council NSW, supporting all cancer patients here in the Hunter. Funds will go towards the charity’s transport to treatment service and ensuring patients have access to crucial information. A Cancer Council NSW spokesperson said, “Tackling cancer takes all of us and we couldn’t be prouder of each and every single Star proving that Novocastrian’s are really the most incredible community!”
