‘Powering ahead’ Hunter renewable energy zone progress
The NSW Government has appointed Ausgrid to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).
The REZ encompasses Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton and Muswellbrook, utilising existing power stations, rehabilitated mining land, and electricity network, port and transport infrastructure.
Through the project, the NSW Government aims to provide more cost-effective renewable energy options to the Hunter region.
Pioneering the state’s net zero movement, the local REZ will be the first in Australia to upgrade existing distribution poles and wires, to minimise impact on surrounding communities and the environment.
Construction of the REZ is set to create an estimated 175 jobs for the region, including roles for engineers, electricians and labourers.
Officials said by fast-tracking the connection of new renewable energy projects, the Hunter-Central Coast REZ will play a critical role in ensuring a reliable supply of power to homes and businesses, putting a downward pressure on bills.
It comes as a key player in the state government’s 2030 renewable energy and net zero targets, with around 35% of NSW electricity already coming from sustainable sources.
It will also help NSW meet its 2030 renewable energy and Net Zero targets.
